Guantanamo bay spies?

The whole point of Guantanamo bay is to keep the hard-core criminals locked away, but as you can see in this video the U.S. came up with a plan on using the prisoners to their advantage. The prisoners were housed in penny lane, a base located near Guantanamo. They were given real beds, private kitchens and showers, pornography for those who ever wanted it, and paid millions of dollars by a CIA account code-named pledge. After 9/11 the  U.S. trained prisoners to be spies then infiltrate them back into Al Qaeda. The big question here is will this help America, or will it back fire?

Michael Leiter feels it was a good decision because with the training these prisoners were given, they will be able to inform us before Al Qaeda is able to plan an attack. On the other side of that point is that if these "spies" return back to Al Qaeda with all the information that was maybe given to them they will choose to help in attacking us. That is where the government went wrong in this plan, what if? what if the prisoners do help in protecting our country and we will have an inside ally watching our backs, but also what if they choose to plot against us when reunited with Al Qaeda members which would be the worst problem that can happen.

I definitely do not agree with the tactics our government is using to get information. Though it can be beneficial, it can also be very dangerous. These prisoners are high level criminals that can have change of heart at any moment. And if this plan doesn't unfold the way our government envisioned it then our country will suffer greatly.

  1. Wow, this is incredibly genius or incredibly stupid. I admire that you bring issues like this to light. I completely agree with you. I do not agree with the tactics our government is using to get information. I feel this could jeopardize not only the safety of our country but our integrity as a whole. Reason being is that these guys are freaking criminals to begin with and we're giving them criminal work to do. What makes our government think they won’t make a criminal decision to turn on us? I see no logic in this what so ever. We are trusting people with the minds of criminals to be our spies. What would happen if they were found out, so to say by Al Qaida and they do not hold up their end of the deal with America? We will lose valuable information and would have contributed to a bigger enemy line because odds are they would join them because they cannot beat them. Our government not only make these decisions behind our back but they make sure that we the people have no say, and as an American, I feel this is tyranny and WRONG. Not only should we know what is going on in the midst of – our country but we should have a say because this is a democracy.

  2. In an article titled, “Guantanamo Bay Spies,” Osi goes address the issue of the U.S. government converting the prisoners into spies. Within the article, Osi describes how some of these prisoners were treated. For example, the prisoners were “given real beds, private kitchens and showers, pornography for those who ever wanted it, and paid millions of dollars by a CIA account code-named pledge.” He also goes on to describe how the U.S. is training these prisoners to go and act as spies. One specific example given is that the U.S. would use these spies to go undercover and gather information from Al Qaeda. Osi then gives his piece of mind by exclaiming he disagrees with the government’s tactics.
I completely agree with Osi’s side. I believe it is wrong and it is incredibly foolish to carryout these plans. These prisoners aren’t in Guantanamo Bay because of minor misdemeanors or crimes. These are prisoners who are essentially terrorists and are a threat to our country, and trusting these people would just be putting our country in jeopardy.
I believe the only thing Osi’s argument is lacking are more facts or, if they are available, information on spies that have actually underwent a mission and came back. However, I do not believe the lacking of these facts or information hinders Osi’s article by any means. It is still a great article with valuable information because not many people know about this situation. His targeted audience, the general population of America, should be informed of what is going on and should definitely consider the actions the government is taking.
